New Whole School Numeracy Focus: Times Tables
We are now turning our attention to learning multiplication (and division) facts throughout the school. This starts all the way back in reception with children learning to count to 20.
In later years we expect that children will learn their table facts by heart so that when asked 5x5, they know that the answer is 25 without having to start all the way back at 0 and count up! This knowledge gives them confidence in numeracy and means that they can perform mental calculations quite quickly.
What you can do:
| Reception | Practise counting to 20 or even 100 with your child. Count objects. Count backwards! |
| Year 1 | Count to 100 in 1s. Count backwards, first from 5, then 10, and then 20.
Count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Learn doubles to 10 (the 2 times table by stealth!) |

Build on work in Year 1 by counting to identify table facts: if I have 2 2s that is 4! Start to learn facts for 2, 5 and 10 times tables. (see guidance for best approach). |
| Year 3 | Learn facts for 2,3,4,5, 6 and 10 times tables. |
| Year 4 | Master facts for all tables up to 10. Once mastered, play mixed table games. |
| Year 5 & Year 6 |
Continue to practise tables and check that children can work out
division facts too: I know 4 x 3 = 12, so 12 divided by 4 = 3. |
