Year 3 and 4
Inventions Letter to Parents Term 4
Years 3 and 4 have a very exciting term planned including a trip to the Science Museum on Thurday 3rd March.
In term 4 children in years 3 and 4 will be following a unit of work on a theme which focuses on ‘How things work’.
Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects. During this unit we will be focusing on History, Technology, Science and Society.
In History, we’ll be finding out:
- About significant inventions of the last 100 years

- About inventions in the way we communicate
- About the history of flight and associated inventions
In Technology, we’ll be finding out:
- How to invent and build something to solve a problem
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
- About the air around us and the science of flight
- How to make a paper glider
In Society, we’ll be finding out:
- How technology and inventions affect people’s lives
- How inventions have made life easier or harder
By the end of the unit, we hope your child has achieved all of the learning targets. We hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom. And we hope you have enjoyed seeing your child work with enthusiasm. If you have any comments about the work your child has done, please get in touch.
Parent and carer help with the Technology project
As part of the unit children will be inventing and building something to solve a problem. This will be an ongoing project throughout the term. Regular weekly homework tasks for the unit will form part of the project, from coming up with ideas for an everday problem to solve, to collecting materials in order to build the invention. We would really appreciate your input in helping your child with the project at home. Additionally we would like to invite you to come in to school in week 6 to attend an exhibition of your child’s work. Further details will be sent out next term.
